My boys and I love to read books together. Let’s face it, it’s pretty much the only time I can get them to snuggle up next to me, so I’ll read until I’m tongue tied. During our many trips to the bookstore or library, we inevitably spend half of our time in the children’s section on the hunt for new reading material. Preferably funny. And male oriented. (Although the older one really does like the Junie B. series, for which I am grateful.) And the ornerier the main characters, the better.
A few months ago, we stumbled upon Manuela Olten’s, Boys are Best!, a story of two little boys who make fun of everything they think is wrong with girls – don’t worry, it’s a short list. It was an instant hit in our home – my sons devoured this book. Its brief dialog and simple humor appeal to both of the boys, despite their age difference, and Olten’s illustrations had the kids in stitches.
Now there is a “warning” here for those of you who may not appreciate, hmmm, unrefined (and I use that term loosely) humor. The boys do show a little bare bottom (gasp) when making fun of girls for constantly changing their doll’s clothes. Of course, MY boys did a full-on belly laugh when they read that page and proceeded to bring the book to life there in the middle of our living room. Harmless, yes. Do I want them performing it for their grandparents…probably not.
But, if you’re looking for some goofy giggles, check out Boys are Best! It’s a great ”before bedtime” read.
